Chuan Chuan Food Stand

Chuan chuan ( Spicy Boil Kabobs )
Chuan Chuan Xiang, also called Ma La Tang, is a kind of popular spicy hot snack in Sichuan province, somewhat like hot pot. Sliced raw meat, vegetables, sausages, shrimps, in fact almost anything edible is impaled on a bamboo skewer and dipped into a pan of boiling hot spicy soup.

Food Stand
Deep in an old industrial community, a Chuan Chuan place stands out in the neighborhood due to its unique flavor. The food stand went through some troubles with publicity in past few decades until three young entrepreneurs decided to invest in the business. They planed to redo the branding, and redesign the food stand to give it a new look and a better street food experience. The concrete structure brings a different materiality to the neighborhood, but with the texture of the cheap painted adds and flyers on the wall, the new structure somehow makes itself belong to the surroundings.

1985
An industrial community was built for accommodating factory workers next door, and a dividing wall was in between, as well as an old irrigation river covered with concrete board served as a sidewalk.

1998
The factory was moved to outside of the city, and a garden was constructed at the old circulation path. However, the sidewalk became useless since it was all walkable space in the garden.

2005
A retired couple created an opening on the dividing wall, and started their Chuan chuan food stand business at the threshold. Without planning, they accidentally revived the abandoned sidewalk.

2009
The food stand business became a local legacy, and a tent structure was added outside to provide hangout space and seating for large demanding and increasing amount of costumers.

2014
City pollution had increased through the years, and the irrigation river started to smell, which is extremely harmful for food business. Gradually, the food stand had became less popular.

2016
A new design for the food stand that not only focused on the accessibility from the garden and separating the smell, but also added vegetation a layer of bio-filter in the river to benefit the entire community.
